“When your body changes from a neurological condition, you end up accepting you have recovered to the best you will be and learn to live with the lingering effects. I was doing so for 5 years after spinal cord damage from MS. On a very chance whim, without any research or knowledge of Pilates I attended an introductory private class with studio owner Kim Johnson at InnerSpace.
From the first session, I realized this practice was very in line with my training in Osteopathic Medicine but better. Better because you can learn the techniques and engage them in your daily life practice.
Every session, Kim is expert in assessing the problematic areas of your body which need to be worked on and tailors the plan for the session. What is interesting with Pilates is a small number of movement reps correctly done with proper control, muscle group engagement, breathing, and motion are much more effective for strengthening and correcting function than anything I have every experienced.
Traditional physical therapy for me was a limited focus on one muscle group with numerous escalating reps which was fatiguing and did not help. Bodies work as a whole unit, so dysfunction in one area effects the whole not just the part. Pilates practice brings the whole body into balance.
Within weeks of only once a week private sessions, any doubts I had of this low impact, low rep method were erased. First the chronic electrical nerve pain on the right side of my body disappeared. Very quickly chronic neck pain and tightness that was affecting my posture and was terribly uncomfortable completely resolved, never to come back since. Amazing after living with it for so long!
My results started early and dramatic. I have continued with once a week private sessions and have undergone such an amazing transformation I never expected would occur. Besides losing all the chronic pain and weakness, I gained an inch of height, lost 35 lbs, and am stronger, more in balance, and more active than I ever was at any age in my life time.
Kim and her team's focus on the individual and their expertise is top tier. I wish some of my friends in need lived closer so they could experience the body and life change I was able to. Kim’s knowledge of assessing an individual’s body, and how to maximize function, strength, balance, and health are unmatched. "
“I don’t like to exercise but I do love Pilates. I feel that the instructors make me strive to do that little bit more and I feel so good and strong at the end of the practice. All the staff is interested in making sure you feel good. And it is fun!”
“I love pilates. For me, for my particular physical issues, it's the perfect blend of stretch and strength that I don't find anywhere else. On a bad day, when I'm stiff or can't turn my head, I leave pilates upright and fluid. On a good day, I fly through the routines, feeling strong, and mobile and challenged. It doesn't actually matter what the day is, I know I will leave the studio feeling better just for being there.”
“I had been a faithful vinyasa yoga enthusiast for over 10 years when I tried Pilates. I came to The Innerspace studio in 2012 initially because I was drawn to the Jivamukti yoga classes that were taught by previous instructors. Since Innerspace was largely a Pilates studio I inquired about the classes that were offered and if Pilates really could help me to become stronger for my yoga practice. I noticed all the equipment and was curious as to how it all worked. I thought Pilates was only mat work and grueling ab exercises. Was I wrong!
I have been a convert to Pilates. Sure I love a good vinyasa yoga class but the strength and toning I have achieved from routinely practicing Pilates is no comparison. Like yoga Pilates stretches and strengthen the whole body. But instead of practicing only on a mat, a Pilates session involves the use of equipment in a very structured environment either individually or in very small classes of 2 or 3 people with highly trained instructors. The workouts are more intense; no cheating allowed! Therefore the results are apparent.
The instructors at Innerspace are awesome. It is evident that they love what they do and they care about each student. They have created a nurturing space that keeps people coming back. I am so glad I found this studio/staff and that Pilates has become a part of my regular routine.
Thank you Innerspace!"
"I began weekly private classes at Inner Space Pilates around the time of my 71st birthday. I have worked with 3 different instructors there. All are passionate about their work, know the human body well, and have a good understanding of my individual peculiarities. Even though I have a background in yoga, my Pilates experience has been a revelation. I have a much clearer idea now of my strengths and weaknesses and of how to go about remedying those weaknesses. The progress I have seen motivates me to keep at it.
One could practice Pilates with just a mat, but the ingenious equipment at the Inner Space studio allows one to focus on problem areas and make more rapid gains. I love being "in training" once again and no longer experience degenerative pain. Now the only pains I experience are regenerative, as my body becomes suppler and stronger. I plan to continue at Inner Space indefinitely."
"I was a 76 year old male when I first contacted Innerspace to learn about Pilates. My stated objective was to be able to exit a car without groaning. It has now been over a year of weekly sessions and I am a different person. My overall flexibility is greatly improved, my groans have disappeared, and my balance is noticeably better. More miraculously, I am hitting a golf ball farther than any of my friends and a lot straighter! I attribute this to the strengthening of my core. I love my sessions with Mary Therese."
